This piece is a set of three string quartet transcriptions of pieces by J. S. Bach for solo string instrument. I used the term transcription loosely here. Bach’s notes, rhythms, and harmonies are like the headwaters of a river from which these three short pieces flow, each with an increasing abstraction and distance from its source. The first is a hocketed, kaleidoscopic exploration of a movement from the B minor violin Partita; the second slows down the harmonies of a single phrase in the D major cello suite; and the third is constructed using only the first handful of double and triple stops in movements across five different works.
